Connected dots - Happy ending or Happy beginning

As I expected Arahana was not there at downstairs. I found her on the terrace; she was looking at the sky that was carrying dark clouds.
“Hey, what are you doing here alone?” I asked.
She turned her head as she heard my voice. The wind was forcing her hairs to stick to her face. What a calm, peaceful and beautiful face that was!
“When did you come?” She asked me and ignored my question.
“Just came from FC road. Sahil was …”
“…Sahil called already!” Cutting my sentence in the middle she said. And she looked at the skies again.
We kept silence for some seconds.

“I am sorry…” we both said sorry at the same time.
“Why you are saying sorry? You did nothing. It’s not your fault.” I asked her.
“Look it’s not like what it looks like…” She said.
“What you mean?” I asked.
“Sahil did not cheat on me. And he was not lying to me.” She said.
“But, I saw him with his other girlfriend ‘Shruti’.” I continued.
“She is the only girlfriend Sahil have. I was never his girlfriend and will never be.” She said.
“What you mean by that. You cried for him the other day. You asked me to patch things between you two. If you were never a girlfriend of him then what was that? A drama?”
“Yes. Drama. A big lie. I lied to you. Sahil was never my boyfriend. He is just a friend of mine. I planned this thing. I dragged Sahil into this. And I dragged you too. This whole Sahil thing was a drama…”
Why would you do this to me? Why fu**ing me?” I asked her in a raised and shaking voice.
“…because. Because I like you…” She said in a firm voice.
“What? You are crazy! Is this your next lie or a next scene in the drama?” I asked her.
“No, it is not a lie this time. I really like you.” She said.
“Unbelievable!” I said. My legs started shaking. Sitting on one of the stairs I continued. “…and all this time you kept on pretending to be Sahil’s girlfriend and played with my emotions? How easily you acted as if it’s not a drama but a fu**king real story…”

Again, we both kept silence for some time.

“I am sorry.” Sitting beside me and holding my hand she said.
“If you really like me, then why this drama?” I asked her separating her hand from my hand.
“I read you diary long time ago. Sorry…! And then I came to know about you like me, and, the way you look at me - I knew you love me. Slowly, I started thinking about you. I thought someday you will tell me about your feelings for me but you didn’t. Then one day I thought why not make this dull life interesting by planning this whole thing. And also, I thought that after going through this whole thing you will know ki what it like is to lose me. And you will never leave me for someone else. You will be mine for forever….” She continued “…and believe me; it was hard, really hard to act. When I saw you and Sahil together in the hotel, for a moment I thought what the hell I am doing. I knew you like me, you love me. And I also knew that I was falling in for you. And I did not want to hurt you. But to complete the play I started I swallowed the tears that I created for myself and ordered black coffee. I never had a black coffee before that day…I was such an idiot. I ended up in hurting you instead and lost you and your respect…I hurt Shruti...I am sorry…” And she started crying.
“Hey, look at me…” I said in a soft voice touching her chin.
“I am sorry…” She said looking at me.
“...Shu-uu. Don’t cry now.” I said it and hugged her. She wrapped her arms around me tightly.
“I don’t know what I should say now. You hurt me to be with me! So being mad at you doesn’t make any point. And I don’t want to lose you. I love you...!” I finally said those words to her.
“I love you too,” Arahana said and tears rolled down her face.
I tried to wipe those and kissed her forehead and hugged her again.
“You are a good actor. You should be in a daily soap. Should I call Ekta Kapoor?” I whispered in her ears.
She smiled and said “Yep…! But before that, we need to call Shruti and tell her the whole story.”
“Yeah, right!” I said.

Liar liar

“Hello?”
“Hello…” I said in low voice.
“So how is our Romeo doing? Or what I should say- ‘how is our patch-up king doing?’ ” It was CC.
“Shut up. I am fuc*ed up… and I don’t want to talk about it right now, at least not on phone.” I said.
“Ok. I will be there in 10.” CC said.
I hung up.
Meet “CC”. CC is my best buddy. His real name “Chandu” and his girlfriend’s name is “Chandra”. But we call him  “CC”.

***
After 15 minutes-

“…So tell me, what happened the other day?” CC asked.
I raised my left eyebrow.
“You, Arahana, Sahil? Don’t pretend as if nothing happened.” CC continued. “Tell me what exactly happened the other day.” He asked.
“I don’t know where to start from...” I said.
“Ok. Let’s walk. Let’s walk to the ice-cream parlor. We will talk over an ice cream. You wanna go outside?  Let’s go. I know you haven't been outside your room from last morning.”  Lacing up his shoe he said, “Come”.

***

“I am taking vanilla flavor. What about you?” CC asked.
“Mango,” I said.
“Ok. One mango and one vanilla - both in cups. Thanks.” He ordered.
And in next 20-30 minutes I told him every single detail about that morning - Arahana, hotel, Sahil, Arahana’s black coffee, flowers, Sahil’s apology to Arahana, my useless phone call to CC, the waiter, bouquet, my bitter - black coffee and my role in patching up things between Arahana and Sahil.
“Hmm… I think one of them is lying. This Sahil thing doesn't sound right to me.” CC said checking if anything is still remaining in his ice cream cup.
“Sahil is not a thing. He is her fuc*ing boyfriend. Arahana loves him, not me. Don’t you get that? I saw her moist eyes when we three were in the hotel and she ordered the black coffee.”
“Wait, was she crying? Why?” CC asked. “I still smell something is wrong. Anyways, give me some time – I will find it out. You better start with studies now.”
“Hmm… Okay. My German shepherd! ”
We both laughed. He paid for ice-creams and we came back to my room.

***
After 2 weeks-

My phone ringed again.
“Yes. CC. What’s now?” I said.
“Good news bro! Be ready to kick someone’s ass. Looks like I found out who was lying - it’s Sahil. Come to FC road. I am waiting at MGM book store. Be there in 10 minutes.” CC said.
“Sahil? 10 minutes? What happened…?” “Damn!” I said as he already hung up.
I reached FC road. MGM book store. CC was checking every couple that was passing by him.
“I think Sahil is cheating Arahana. He is lying to her. I saw him with a new girl, sitting on a bench over there.”
“She might be his cousin,” I said while taking a look around and searching for the bench.
“No. She isn’t. Why he will sit with cousin putting his arms around her? That too in a public place! ” CC sounded right to me this time.
“Ok. Where are they?” I asked.
“Right over there”. He pointed towards a bench.
“Oh my fuc*ing Lord!” I screamed.
“What happened?” CC asked.
“I have seen that girl in the hotel the other day - the same day when Arahana first told me about Sahil and her. I came to the hotel after that. It was raining that day. And this girl came with a boy who was wearing a helmet…” I continued “…was she with Sahil? Because Sahil came with the similar helmet the other day in hotel Kalpana to meet me and Arahana! Oh my God!"
“Ok. Then let’s catch him red-handed.”  CC said.
We walked towards that bench. CC clicked a photo of the couple using his phone before they notice us.
“Hello Sahil, what’s ...”, I asked as we approached them.

“Hi, I am Chandu…Sahil’s friend.” CC attracted girl’s attention cutting me in the middle of my question.Of course, CC was lying about being a friend of Sahil.

“Hi, I am Shruti. Sahil’s GF.” She said.
Sahil stood up. “Guys, can we talk for 2 minutes? Alone?” He said.
“Alone? Why? We can discuss here. No Shruti?” I continued. “Hi... I am Manoj.”
Sahil’s face turned red when CC asked him. “Do Arahana know about this?”
“What? Yeah…yes, she knows.” Sahil said in a lower and reluctant voice.
“Who is Arahana?” Shruti asked. Anger and awe in her words and on her face.
“Arahana is Sahil’s other girlfriend,” I said.
“What? She is Sahil’s girlfriend?” “Is this true Sahil?” Shruti asked Sahil in a raised pitch. Her face turning red.
“Shruti, I can explain...”, Sahil’s tone was apologetic and guilty.
“So it’s true, you can explain...explain what? My foot! I am leaving. Bye. Next time you talk to me, be ready for a slap,” she shouted with the explicit rate.
She left stamping her feet. Her purse was shining as she was walking.
“Bye, Sahil...” CC said and he signaled me to leave.
We left. I looked back once. Sahil was sitting on a bench. Alone. He was talking to someone on phone.
“You need to go and catch Arahana as early as possible,” CC said.
“Thanks a lot, CC,” I said to him, smiling.
“Always!” He said with a mischievous smile.

Black coffee

"You must be 'Manoj'." I heard a firm voice coming from a 6-feet tall body.
"Yes...! Yeah...Saahil? Right?"
"Yep, where is Arahana?"
"She went to the ladies room. Will be back in a minute or two. Please have a seat." I said.
Resting his helmet on the table he put a colorful plastic bag on one of the empty chair.

'Hotel Kalpana' was the best place to meet for three of us. It was near Arahana's college & was also near the hostel where Sahil stayed. We two - 'me and Arahana' reached the hotel at around ten in the morning. When we reached there I texted him asking to join us soon. It was one of the fresh and chilly morning in the rainy season. The Sun was still hiding behind the skies and black clouds were all over my head and fate. We two went there by the bus and then walked a little to reach the hotel.

The irritating noise produced by the friction between the floor and chair when Arahana tried to occupy herself in the chair broked my chain of thoughts and put me back in the ring to face Sahil.

"Hi, Arahana." Sahil started.
"Hie.." She said.
Then we observed a silence for a minute. Every one of us was scanning the menu card.

"Ok lovebirds. Tea, coffee or anything for breakfast?" I made the noise in the silence.
"Nothing. I want..." Both of them said at the same time. Wow! That was quite one voice!!
"Ok... make it 3 coffees please," I asked the waiter.
"One black coffee no sugar," Arahana said in hurry to the waiter.

For a moment I wondered for why she wants a black coffee with no sugar. I looked at her and she gave me a "because-I-am-not-in-mood" look.
The waiter left for coffees and Sahil started again.

Taking out a beautiful bouquet of red roses n white lilies he said to Arahana with twinkling eyes, "For you..."
She took it in one hand but said nothing.
Holding her hand he said, "Look, Arahana...I am sorry. I am sorry for all the things I said to you. I am sorry I shouted at you... I freaked you out. I am sorry for everything I done to you in past few days. I want you in my life... and I can't imagine my life without you..."

Wow! He was actually sounding nice guy at that moment. Clearing the mindset I made about him I was thinking.
Leaving her hand gently he looked at me giving me "thank-you-but-now-get-the-hell-out-of-here" look.
No... he is still a jerk. I reframed him as a rude person again and stopped thinking.
"Ok guys, you carry on. I have to make a phone call. I will be back in some minutes." Saying so I left her into his hands and came out of the hotel.

It has already started raining a little outside. I went to the parking area of the hotel. Thinking of her I took out the cellphone from my jeans pocket. I dialled the number. It started ringing and I cut it. Some minutes passed. And my cell ringed. I picked up the call.

"Hello, did you call sometime ago? I was in the bathroom."

"Sorry, I dialled it accidentally. Will call later."

"Is everthing okay?"

"Yeah...yes...everything is good. I will call you later. Sorry... bye."

"Bye..."

I sat on the bench there under a tree in the parking area for some time. After five more minutes I decided to go inside the hotel. Beween I heard a bike making sound. When I looked back I was surprised to see Sahil and Arahana sitting on a bike and making a way through the parking. They soon joined the main street.

I came inside and occupied my place again. The waiter came after half a minute with a bouquet in hand. Handing it over to me he said, "They two asked me to give you this bouquet and this note. They cancelled your previous coffee and but have paid in advance for one more coffee."

I opened the note.

"Thanks dude...

Sahil. :)"

"So, tea or coffee...Sir?" Waiter continued.
"One black coffee with no sugar. And thanks for this...." I thanked him and ordered the black coffee. Now i wanted to taste it out.

It was bitter. But not more bitter than the truth i was swallowing.

Into the void

"Hotel Kalpana, 10 AM, this Sunday. I will be coming with Arahana. OK?" I asked.
"Okay..." Sahil said and hanged the phone.

I was looking at my cell phone - thoughtless! It beeped after two seconds showing me the last call charge details - 45 minutes and some seconds, the same number of bucks. It hurt me even more.

How could she possibly be with such a jerk! He sounded rude to me. He wasn't sorry about what he did. Neither he asked about her. Why she loves him so much? How could she bear him?

I went downstairs. Told Arahana about the plan. She seemed happy then. Her eyes glittered.
"Thank you... I knew you could fix this that's why I asked you to call him..." She whispered taking care that no one else at the home could hear a word.

"Not a problem..." I said. That was hard to say!
I wanted to hug her tight and cry and tell her how I feel about her but... that was forbidden... at least for next few days.

"I am going out for recharging my number...." saying so I escaped and came out.

I wanted to be alone... just myself... and not think about anything or anyone. With moist eyes, I looked up in the sky. It was getting darker and the thunderstorm was in its ways. It was about to rain.

I removed my specs to clean the rain drops falling on the glasses. "Everything is clear now! " I said to myself. I recharged my mobile number. I desperately needed a coffee. I went for it in the nearby hotel. I occupied the table in the corner. FM station Radio Mirchi was playing a song from movie "Delhi belly".
"I hate you
Like I love you
I hate you
Like I love you"

I saw a boy wearing a helmet and a girl entering the hotel. They occupied the table next to me. They looked like a couple. I could not see his face as he was still wearing the helmet but I could see her face. She was shivering with cold. And he was taking a good care of her.

I ordered coffee and started looking outside into the void. Sunday was one day away from that day and she was one boyfriend away from me!!!

Never a smooth road

city road

Previously: In "Why not girls first?"

"... Suddenly I felt someone gently touching my shoulder. It was Arahana.
"I need to talk to you." She said."

continued:

I never expected her to be there on the terrace at my Uncle's house. With a little surprise, I looked at her.

What the heck she is doing here? Wasn't she supposed to be there in the kitchen taking cooking lessons from her Aunt OR watching some reality show on tv in the hall? I was thinking.

She was in a pink t-shirt and blue trousers and her short hairs were undone but still looking OK.
"What are you writing?" She questioned.
"Mmm ... nothing ... You were going to say something to me."
She took a pause and a long breath. She released the breath making her nostrils bigger than those were.
"I'm confused. I don't know if I should tell this all to you or not. Maybe this is not the right time. I will talk to you later. Continue your work." She said and she headed to downstairs.
"Wait, Arahana. There is something I want to tell you too!!!"
"OK. Tell me." She climbed back the stairs again.
"But first, what you wanted to talk about?" I asked her.

I had very clear idea of what I was going to tell her after she was done. And,  which was tell her my feelings about her and ask her out. I really liked her and I wanted her to know that. But, what she was going to tell me? She usually does not initiate a conversation. She talks less (well I had heard so). Then what was it? Was she going to ask me out and propose?  I thought of the thoughts I had a few minutes ago but I had no clue of what she was going to say!

She was still thinking, she looked unsure.
I called out her name again. "Arahana, what's it? Is everything OK? You are freaking me out now. Please tell whatever you have in your mind." I did whatever best I could do to make her speak out.
"My boyfriend broke up with me yesterday..."
She dropped the bomb finally!

What the hell!!! Poor me!! What was I daydreaming about, proposing her? Wait, Mr. Romeo. Slow down and be careful - the road is not smooth but bumpy. But, wait, I never knew she had a boyfriend. Yes, she had and now they have broken up. So, is that a warning to stay away or an opportunity to seize? I had a thousand thoughts running through my mind.

Interrupting my thoughts she continued.
"... and ..."
"And what?" I asked with curiosity to know what else was remained then.
With moist eyes and sad voice, she said,
"... and ... I want you to fix this for me. Please contact him and tell him I am sorry. Please, I can't live without him."

Now that was an awkward moment for me.

"Why don't you call him and patch up? He is your boyfriend! Plus, I don't even know him. And, I was not even knowing that you have a boyfriend."
"It's going to be same anyway. He doesn't want to see me again. He is not answering my calls and texts. Please call him." She gave stress on "call him" words.

Well, I was like somebody first call an ambulance for me!!

"OK. I will call him. But, first, you have to tell me in short - how it happened. Tell from the start, everything, from when you two first met to how you landed at this point."
"OK, I will."
I didn't want to go into details. So I managed her to tell me the whole story in half an hour. She did. She gave me his number.
I asked her to go downstairs and relax. And when she went downstairs, I dialed his number.

"Hello, 'Sahil?'"
"Yes, who is this?"
"Hi, this is Manoj. Arahana's friend. I got something important to talk with you..."

One text, 5 questions and 5 beautiful answers

Once, I texted her asking-

"Forget or Forgive?
Blue or Green?
Mango or Orange?
Sweet or Spicy?
Me or Others?"

I never expected such a beautiful reply from her...

"Forget or Forgive?
FORGET all your mistakes; FORGIVE you when you forget to bring me chocolates.

Blue or Green?
BLUE because I like the blue sky; GREEN because you make me love all the colors of life.

Mango or Orange?
MANGO because you love it; ORANGE because I love it.

Sweet or Spicy?
SWEET because you are sweetest; SPICY because you call me so!

Me or Others?
YOU(ME) because you are my world; OTHERS because then I can make you special from others!"

I have read this text thousand times and each time I read it, I fall in love with her all over again. Miss you my Princess...

One month later:
"Another rainy day. I got down on the bus trying my best to keep my jeans clear. This is the only thing I hate about rainy season, it makes you change your clothes few more times a day and wash those few more times a week. I was already late for the lecture and was thinking of bunking the first one.
I started walking. I sensed someone passing me by. I felt like someone is running to catch the bus. But, No! SHE wasn’t. She, of nothing, came almost running and stood in front of me.
"Hello, headphone guy! Do you remember me?” unmasking her face and removing her goggles she asked.
"Of course I do remember you...screaming-crying girl", I said.
We both laughed on our new names.
"So where are you going?" She asked.
"To rule the world..." I said.
"What?"
"Just kidding. I am going to college and you?"
"Me too...!"
"Great!" I said.
What’s next? What next should I talk about now...I started thinking...say something dude...say something…
"Aren't you going to ask me about what had happened the other day?"
"Yeah, I was going to ask the same." I lied so beautifully.
"Okay, it’s a long story..."
"Well, I like listening to long stories."
"Great!" She said.
"Let’s walk to some hotel, have a cup of coffee over there and talk about your story."
"Hmmmm... 8:45..." She checked the time on her cell phone. Looked at me and said "Cool. Let’s walk..."
I tried to remember how much cash I had in my wallet. Thank God, it was more than enough for that time.
Interrupting my thoughts and clearing all my calculations she said, "When I was crying on the phone why didn't you said something to me? I was sitting right next to you. If there was any other boy he must have had tried to take that as a chance to flirt with me. Dumbo, why did you offered me your headphone instead of asking me anything..."
"...maybe that was my way of flirting." I interrupted her.
She stopped for a moment, looked at me again and smiled. For a moment I thought she liked my answer. But I really wasn't sure.
"Really?" She questioned me back.
"No. Actually, I was trying to keep it cool that day..." I said.
"Why? Did you also have a similar phone call before I entered the bus? And that’s why you were listening to music?" She questioned me again.
I lied there again. Actually, I was listening to her phone call with full interest. But I was really afraid of talking with her. I thought she will slap me right in my face if I ask her a single word about the phone call. But I don’t know why I had the strangest idea of offering her a headphone. But there I lied again, so prettily-
"Hahaha...Nope! I didn't have any phone call that day. But I had an interview call the same day. So I was little nervous and tensed. That’s why I left you early without asking you anything." I said.
"Oh...what happened with the interview?"
"Forget it!” I said.
"What...? What happened?" She asked with curiosity.
“Forget it- That is what they said to me."
“Oh... I got it now.” She said.
And silence again spread its wings.
…. …. ….
…. …. ….
And there buzzed my cell phone alarm. I woke up. Dream ended. Oh my God! That was a dream. Though a dream, it came to be true very soon but in a slightly different way.

"Hahaha... Actually, yes! I did have a phone call that day almost similar to yours. Just I was listening and the person at other end was screaming at me. Also, I had an interview call the same day. So I was little nervous and tensed. That’s why I left you early without asking you anything." I said.
"Oh...what happened with the interview?"
"Forget it!”
"What...? What happened?" She asked with curiosity.
“Forget it- That is what they said to me."
“Oh... I got it now.” She said. “And, about the call, who was on the other end?” she asked me again.
“It too is a long story,” I said. “Better we grab a coffee first and proceed to your story first.” I continued.
“Yeah, no problem.” Putting her pink umbrella back in the bag she said.
“I am Manoj by the way. And your good name please?”
“I am Sharvika. You can call me ‘Sharoo’”. She almost commanded me to call her so.
“Nice name ‘Sharoo’”.
“Thanks!”
“So we met again, finally, without exchanging the numbers! Just as you wished!!” she continued.
We laughed and entered the hotel.

Tryst with destiny

bus

7 AM...a bus-stop in Pune...the daily crowd as usual...college students and people doing jobs...everyone in hurry...all waiting for the bus...everyone with a question mark on a face and some wrinkles on the forehead...everyone looking at the horizon from where the buses come...
I got a seat. A window seat. It was Saturday, less crowd, almost everyone got a place to sit. The seat next to mine was empty. I plugged in the earphones and started listening to my favorite songs collection. Music makes you forget all your worries, pains and takes you to the totally different world.
The driver applied brakes at one stop. JERK! Some people got off the bus and some got in. A girl came and sat on the empty seat next to me. I was looking outside through the window...the window glasses were covered partially with dust.
Some minutes passed, and I heard someone screaming on the phone...
....holy sh*t! It was the same girl sitting next to me, screaming on phone. I lowered down music volume to hear what and why she was talking so loud on the phone. What was there in the Pandora's box?
"Goto hell...I have told you hundreds of time...I don't want to be with a jerk like you. You are an as*h*le...hang the f***ing phone you bast**d and never ever dare to call me again..."
Soon, she realized everyone staring at her and listening to her words. She cut the phone call, put her hands on on face covering her moist eyes...Silence passed...She tried to clean her wet eyes. She took a long breath and tried to relax in the seat by adjusting herself a little...
I was wondering what might have happened with her and all! I looked at her, she was still crying...She was a tall, pretty girl...dark hairs and dark eyes with curved eyebrows....she was wearing jeans and a top...she looked like a college student...I don't know what I thought-I tapped on her shoulder and offered her one earphone...the left one..asking her if she wants to hear some music...!
She didn't think for a second, took one earphone and started listening to the music. I was not expecting this response from her, well not so quick...
"Kal ho na ho",
"Jab koi bat bigad jaye",
"I will never fall in love again",
"Koi fariyaad is dil me",
"Khuda Jaane Ke Mein Fida Ho.."
"Sajade kiye hai"
We heard 6-7 songs from a shuffled playlist all presenting different mood. She seemed to be more relaxed and calmed down at the end of each song...
Finally, we reached our destination "Pune Mahanagar Palika Corporation".
"Everyone, last bus stop, get down fast", conductor screamed, playing his daily role...
She gave me a smile and returned back my earphone. She just said,"Thanks, it helped!!!". She got down from the bus. I stuck in the line inside the bus. In a minute or two I came out...I got down from the front door and started walking to catch the next bus...
And somebody tapped on my shoulder now. It was she.
"I was waiting for you to get down from the bus", she said.
"Why??" I asked.
"To say thanks again."
"Okay...you are most welcome."
"You are not going to ask me why I was screaming over phone....
.....I interrupted her and said, "Sorry...but I am really getting late..."
"Oops...sorry." she said. "Can I get your number?" she continued.
"Well not now... If the almighty God wants us to meet again, we will meet again...just like now...without exchanging phone numbers...!
Let's see what's written in our fate...and one more thing whatever may be the reason, please don't cry again...you look great with a smile on your face...cya...bye..."
"Bye..." she said....
"Stupid interview call...I have a bad luck, she won't meet me again", I cursed my fate...and started walking again....
to be continued...
